Yomitan is kind of like the Berkeley (CA) or Bisbee (AZ) of Okinawa. It's artsy-fartsy mixed with hippie and very deliberate folksiness. It also has something of a pottery tradition, and the Yomitan Pottery Village is where it's at for shopping. There was a festival there this past weekend. The Pater Familias took me there to get a Christmas present (and part of my present was him juggling both kids while I juggled my camera and shopping). I'm sure that one day I'll look back on my early black & white conversions and cringe, but for now I'm having fun.
The day was hot and sunny and there was a festive atmosphere, with all the best wares set out for buyers. Most shoppers were Okinawan. Each shop had treats like tea, candy, and Okinawan donuts out for the taking--and best of all, I didn't break anything with my 3 year old or my camera bag!
